Advantages of Outfeed Guarding
Wexxar is proud to introduce a new outfeed safety guarding option for our WF-2T, WF-20T and WF-30T machines. Wexxar takes your safety seriously, offering the added benefit of key-activated safety interlock switches on all of our WF Series units.
These electronic interlock switches prevent operators from reaching into the machine during routine operation and maintenance, and are also featured on the machine’s sliding and bi-fold doors. Opening any of the guard doors instantly disables all electronic and pneumatic machine functions, stopping the machine immediately and cutting all power to machine mechanisms.
The main benefit of adding outfeed protection is the extension of the machine’s restrictive envelope, the machine’s security footprint, which allows a heightened level of safety for machine operators and maintenance personnel.
However, the outfeed guarding includes yet another level of protection, featuring door-mounted magnets that provide the resistance required to keep the door from opening unintentionally, thereby reducing the number of machine restarts.
Having outfeed guarding also allows machine operators to shut down the machine immediately while they are away from the control panel. Machine operators who are standing on the side of an outfeed conveyor opposite the operator’s side of the machine can use the guard doors as an Emergency Stop.
The Outfeed Guard doors can be useful in emergency situations and in circumstances where the machine operator needs to shut the machine down without delay. For example, the operator can prevent the machine from forming cases when an adhesive application error that is undetected by the machine requires a machine adjustment. This added level of machine control reduces risk as well as preventing case jams and wasted corrugate.
Having clear outfeed guarding also permits machine operators to identify the causes of case jams more accurately.
The increased visibility permits more precise calibration verification of the case size adjustment. Furthermore, the safety doors include cautionary labels intended to prevent unauthorized personnel from entry into the machine’s restrictive envelope.
The easy to install kit for the outfeed guarding can be installed on a left- or right-handed machine and allows both doors to open outwards for easy access to the discharge end of the machine. The kit is made of materials manufactured from aluminum, steel, and polycarbonate and comes with two safety interlock switches and electric cable to wire to the panel box. To order the outfeed guarding assembly, contact the Wexxar/BEL Parts Department at 604-930-9300 for pricing. Refer to the assembly number 63-2300.
Outfeed Guarding Assembly
Mechanical Installation
- Since the outfeed guarding comes pre-assembled, it is fairly easy to install. Many of the WF Series of tray formers already have predrilled holes on which to install the outfeed guarding. However, if you have an older machine model, some drilling may be required. If so, refer to drawing 63-3383.
- Before attaching the guard doors onto the machine, ensure that the mounting holes in the aluminum angle bracket align perfectly with the holes drilled in the machine frame.
- Using the provided fasteners, bolt the doors to the machine frame.
Electrical Installation
- Materials: An adequate quantity of electrical cable and fasteners has been included to wire the guard doors to the control box.
- Routing: It is recommended that the electrical cables be grouped with the black FRL cable. The cable for the door closest to the control panel can be brought directly to the FRL cable, while the cable for the opposite door should be attached to the underside of the frame arch and down to join the other door cable. Then both cables can be brought up to the base of the control box. To enter the control box, the two cables need to be separated.
- Control box access: On the bottom of the electrical panel, you will need to punch two 5/8” knock-outs and install two 3/16” - 5/16”, LTF9 strain relief connectors. The cables need to be fed through these two connectors.
- Connections: The connection requirements will vary from one machine to another. Please contact the Service Department at Wexxar (604) 688-6373 for details on the electrical connection requirements for your machine.
