Side Belt Conveyor System
The BEL 5150 has a Uni-Drive conveyor system in which both side belts are driven by a single motor and gear reducer. The Uni-Drive ensures that both belts are synchronized at the same speed, in order to keep cases square through the taping section of the machine.
Belt Tension and Tracking Adjustment
The side belts are tensioned and the tracking is controlled by top and bottom adjustments on both idle pulleys. The belt tension should be enough to keep the belts from slipping on the drive pulley. However, too much tension will cause excessive strain and premature wear of the belts and pulley bearings.
The top tension and tracking adjustments are under covers at the front of the conveyor. To increase or decrease the belt tension, loosen the locking nut and adjust the top and bottom screws in the same direction. To correct the tracking of the belts so that they ride on the center of the idle pulley adjust the top and bottom screws in opposite directions while observing the effect on the vertical position of each belt when the conveyor runs. Re-tighten the locking nut after making any adjustments.
Drive Chain Tension
Chain tension is preset at the factory, but if further adjustment is needed, first remove the top side stainless steel safety covers at the rear of the machine. Loosen the idle-sprocket mounting bolt under the frame and the lock nut on the idle sprocket adjustment. This process is similar to that of the belt tension adjustment. Adjust the chain tension using the adjustment screw. Proper tension is achieved when the horizontal sag in the chain measures between 1/8 inch and 1/4 inch with drive belts in a fully opened position or until there is no significant noise in the machine operation.
The chain should be lubricated approximately once every hundred hours of operation, using a suitable type of chain lubricant.
WARNING: The drive covers must be replaced before operating the machine.
The optional BEL 5150 Spare Parts Maintenance Kit contains all of the parts necessary for maintaining the Uni-Drive conveyor. See the Technical Reference manual for details, and contact the factory or your local Wexxar/BEL distributor for the kit’s price and availability.
Conveyor Side Belt Replacement
To replace the conveyor side belts, use the following procedure:
1. Remove the stainless steel covers from the top belt tension and tracking adjustments.
2. Loosen the lock nuts, and release the belt tension by backing off both the top and bottom adjustment screws.
3. Unbolt and remove the top adjustment mounting plate.
4. Remove the stainless steel conveyor cover. Lift out the idle pulley together with the belt. Note that the pulley shaft with its top and bottom pulley spacers will become loose and separate parts.
5. Replace the belt and remount the pulley. Replace the stainless steel cover and the top adjustment plate. Position the pulley shaft so that the adjustment screws will nest in the shallow recess hole. Re-tension and adjust the tracking of the belts as described above. Replace the top adjustment plate.
Case Former Operating Cycle
Three sensors need to be activated by a case blank before the machine cycle will start.
1. The left side of the case activates the sensor inside the left-side machine cover, and as the blank is lowered into the former, both major (side) flaps activate sensors on the floor brackets on each side of the machine. With all three sensors activated, the folding cycle starts.
2. The two small levers of the major flap openers momentarily open the bottom major flaps wider to provide unobstructed clearance in order to fold in the minor (front and rear) flaps.
3. The minor flap folders fold up both end flaps of the case bottom and then retract.
4. Sensors at the case front minor flap folder detect when the minor flaps have been fully folded and trigger both the retracting of the minor flap folding arms and the actuation of the major flap folders.
5. The major flap folder roller plates then fold up both side flaps of the bottom and stay in position to support the case for packing.
6. Pushing the case out of the machine breaks the contact with the case side sensor inside the packing station cover and the former resets, ready for the next case.
Energy Saving Mode
Shut-off Time Adjustment
The energy saving mode will turn the machine conveyor OFF when no new cases have been processed through the machine within a predetermined time. The LOGO machine controller stays active and on STANDBY mode. Only the conveyor drive motor is tuned OFF. The green ‘START’ button will flash ON and OFF when the machine is in the energy-saving STANDBY mode. Pushing the button will restart the conveyor and make the machine ready to run more cases.
Use the following procedure to increase or reduce the amount of inactive time in the LOGO controller program before it will shut the conveyor OFF:
1. If the power is not already ON, turn it ON and wait for the display to appear.
2. Use the ‘DOWN ARROW’' button and ‘ESC’ button to switch the display.
3. Scroll the display screen as shown.
4. Use the ‘DOWN ARROW’ button to move cursor down to ‘Set Param’. Touch the ‘OK’ button.
5. Use the ‘UP/DOWN ARROW’ buttons to scroll to ‘T7-ESAVE’.
6. Scroll to the ‘T7-ESAVE’ display.
7. Touch the ‘OK’ button.
8. Use the ‘UP/DOWN ARROW’ buttons to change the numerals in the time value. Use the ‘LEFT/RIGHT ARROW’ buttons to shift the cursor back and forth between the digits in the time value. Note that the minute ‘m’ value can also be changed to ‘h’ for hours if more delay or effective disabling of the function is desired.
9. Press the ‘OK’ button to accept the new settings and the ‘ESC’ button to return to RUN mode.
