Overview
The Rotary Flap Folder should run smoothly, and should come down, coast, hold, and retract without rough bouncing, jolting or banging. A well-tuned Rotary Flap Folder mechanism on the BEL290 prevents significant machine wear and/or damage.
Update Machine
Our BEL290 technology has improved in recent years.
If your model includes Air Cylinder Retraction Springs, update your machine for optimal performance by performing the following steps:
1. Remove Springs
Remove the Air Cylinder Springs (shown right, in red) on the Rotary Flap Folder assembly. Do this by removing the shoulder bolts that hold them in place.
2. Update Programs
With the removal of these springs, the PLC & HMI Programs should also be updated. Request a copy of the most recent version from Wexxar: service@wexxar.com.
Correct HMI Timing
The Rotary Flap Folder timing (esp. ‘folder down hold time’) may require minor adjustments. These are done on the HMI touch-screen. For a case with:
- Short flaps: a longer ‘folder down hold time’ may be needed.
- Long flaps: a shorter ‘folder down hold time’ may be needed.
Recommended Parameters
Parameter | Min | Max | Recommendation |
---|---|---|---|
FOLDER HOLD DOWN TIME | 20 | 99 | (50+ is recommended) |
All other Rotary Folder Parameters: | Adjustments to factory settings are not recommended. If they had been inadvertently changed from factory settings: optimal ranges are given below. | ||
FOLDER DOWN START TIME | 1 | 50 | 13-14 |
FOLDER DOWN COAST TIME | 1 | 50 | 3-5 |
FOLDER UP START TIME | 1 | 50 | 15-18 |
FOLDER UP COAST TIME | 1 | 50 | 3-7 |
FOLDER UP HOLD TIME | 1 | 50 | 2-4 |
To adjust these values: go to the “Rotary Folder” screen by pressing the ROTARY FOLDER button on the ‘Parameters’ screen.
Press the black field next to parameter to be changed, (eg. shown right).
Enter the desired parameters on the pop-up 10-key pad /screen.
Rotary Folder Mechanism Tuning Summary
There are four steps to tuning the Rotary Flap Folder mechanism.
1. Adjust Air Regulator Settings
The Rotary Folder uses a relative pressure scheme. The main air regulator must have sufficient air or an imbalance will result in the Rotary Folder slamming.
Assure that the main air regulator is set correctly according to the values in table below:
Main Air Regulator (PSIG) | Rotary Folder Regulator (PSIG) | Comment |
---|---|---|
90 | 55 | Ideal settings |
80 | 50 | If pressure in line coming to the main FRC drops below the FRC setting + 10 PSI (eg. if incoming pressure drops below 100 PSIG, when set at 90); lower the settings correspondingly. |
70 | 44 | If pressure in line coming to the main FRC drops below the FRC setting + 10 PSI (eg. if incoming pressure drops below 100 PSIG, when set at 90); lower the settings correspondingly. |
Confirm correct setting:
Upon resetting the machine, the rotary folder should rise slowly and return to its home position before the START option becomes available. If the START option becomes available before the rotary folder returns to its home position, the Rotary Folder is not tuned correctly.
2. Set Upper Shock Absorber at Zero
The upper shock absorber should be set at the lowest setting, as the upward force should be minimal.
3. & 4. Adjust Cylinder Cushions
Loosen the nut and use a screwdriver to adjust the cylinder cushions as follows:
(3) The clevis-end cushion should be set at the widest open setting. The peg should be fully extended, but not removed.
(4) The rod-end cushion is correctly adjusted by following these steps:
- Observe the machine in dry-cycle mode. Notice whether the rotary flap folder bounces when it comes down. If it bounces, skip the next step.
- If the rotary folder does not bounce, close the rod-end cushion several turns. Dry-cycle again. Continue this process until it does bounce. (It is easier to find the right adjustment, knowing it is too tight—bouncing—then loosening off in small increments—until bouncing stops).
- Loosen the rod-end cushion in very small increments (1/16 to 1/8 turns) and troubleshoot by dry-cycling at least 2 cycles after each adjustment. Continue until any jolting/bouncing motions and any banging noises are eliminated.
- Lock down. When the correct setting is achieved, lock down the cushion, and dry-cycle again to confirm the rotary folder still performs smoothly.
